Summary:

The episode begins with a dream that Yuki has, the dream is about a woman who looks a lot like him as she is dying she tells Luka that this is what she wants in her final moments alive she wants her death to be by his hands. However much to her disagreement Luka says he doesn’t want to see her suffer and will only kill her if the time comes and he walks off into the empty world, the women tells him to wait, however he carries on walking and tells her that he will never betray her and she screams his name. Eventually Yuki wakes up from the dream that he had due to his alarm clock going off, Yuki is living in an orphanage called “Asahi Institute” until he graduates from High School. Yuki then notices that his dreams have been weird lately and when he wakes up from them he can’t remember them, he knows that somehow they are important and he needs to remember them but can’t. As Yuki is thinking about the dreams he’s been having he is greeted by someone at the gate of the orphanage called Kanata, they chat for a while before Kanata gives Yuki a picture book which he can read to the children in the orphanage when he gets back from school. Yuki goes inside the orphanage to give the book to the chairman there and tells him that Kanata gave it to him, the chairman then wishes that Kanata would go and see him sometime; Yuki informs him that he made some call to his work and is waiting for him outside. Yuki leaves the chairman’s office and is asked by an employee to get the newspaper as she forgot to he goes and gets the newspaper and a letter falls to the ground which Yuki immediately recognises it is for him when he gets back to his room he opens it to find out it’s a death threat sent by an anonymous person. Eventually Yuki and Kanata end up walking with each other on their way to Yuki’s school and Kanata’s college, but they split up as there destinations are different.

Scene shifts to this boy and girl sitting by waiting for Yuki to pass, according to the boy Yuki should arrive soon, the girl says that Yuki hasn’t changed that much and is still cute. Whilst those two people are talking about Yuki now being a boy instead of a girl, a group of three people start harassing some local people at the bus shelter, and one of the people says that they should follow the rules and get in line and one of them winds up kicking him. However seeing the treatment of the person by the gang the girl now known as Touko goes to stop them but the boy with her stops her and tells her to wait, and that he’ll go instead but as he said that Yuki appeared and tells them to stop it or they’ll kill him, they try to attack Yuki but he winds up pinning one of them down and ends up seeing what happened with this guy’s father and stumbles back, just as the boy is about to hit him he gets hit in the head by a chestnut. Touko and the boy wind up helping out Yuki and Touko tells him that what he just did was dangerous but Yuki felt the need to help out the guy and he thanks them, just as he was about to ask how he knew his name they disappeared, and Luka is seen on top of a rooftop observing Yuki. Finally, Yuki makes it to school and is pestered by some girls who had heard that he fought some thugs before arriving at school, Yuki makes up an excuse to flee from the girls and bumps into a friend called Uzuki who is tending to some flowers he comments that they are pretty, he notices something on Uzuki’s neck and touches it and he see’s a glimpse into Uzuki’s past with his alcoholic mother and without realising it asks Uzuki if his wound is alright in which Uzuki shouts at him and runs off. The scene shifts to Uzuki in the toilets and there he’s talking about how Yuki is always bothering him when something starts talking to him saying he knows that it was him that sent Yuki all those death threats and states that he is not to blame for Yuki’s actions.

Going back to Kanata who is in his apartment when the doorbell rings Yuki is there to see Kanata about the apartments he told him about earlier, and informs him that if none of the places are to his liking they can always continue the search. Noticing Yuki’s unusual behaviour he inquires what is wrong with him, but Yuki quickly dismisses that nothing is wrong with him and thanks Kanata for the places he found, Kanata says that there’s still time before his graduation and he can take as long as he likes, however Yuki says that he wants to become like Kanata has fast as possible. Yuki then goes over to look at Kanata’s books on his desk and notices an odd one and asks what it is and Kanata says it was his only possession in the orphanage and it is called “Raziel’s Key” Yuki inquires what the book is about Kanata tells him that it is something for the world and that the entire world is coming into ruin. Kanata then asks Yuki if he agrees with him and the scene goes to Yuki telling a story to the children in the orphanage so they go to sleep, which they do, after that he gets a text message from Uzuki telling him to help him. Immediately after receiving the text message Yuki runs off to try and help Uzuki, Yuki sees him standing in the middle of the road after realising that he goes into the middle of the road to try and get Uzuki out of the way when he reaches him Uzuki vanishes and Yuki is puzzled and sits in the middle of the road. Luka comes to Yuki’s rescue just in time before he gets run over by the truck, and takes him to the bridge and sits him on the ground before asking if he was injured, Yuki replies that he is okay and then he vaguely notices his silver eyes and they look strangely familiar, then a voice says that they finally meet and Yuki hastily gets to his feet. Luka warns Yuki to be careful around Uzuki and tells him that Uzuki was just an illusion then he explains that an illusion is darkness and it won’t be long before darkness consumes light. Yuki is shocked to hear this but Luka states that he had clues but Yuki still refuses to believe it and Luka tells Yuki that he’s right there, and he will help him if need be also he will never betray him, Yuki wonders what this familiar feeling he’s experiencing is.

Personal Opinion:

Wow I’m totally flabbergasted this first episode lived up to my expectations thoroughly, good work J.C. Staff you have surprised me. Anyway, on with my thoughts well I expected this episode to be a little slower paced but surprisingly it wasn’t and the pace that the episode carried was fluent and in my opinion right for the 1st episode considering they probably want to set the scene for the rest of the series, I’m just hoping it won’t be as bad as Vampire Knight. The action in this episode didn’t really come until about 8 minutes from the end of the show but I think that was intended because without all the build up before it wouldn’t have had the necessary impact on the viewers, it seems that Yuki (Souichiro Hoshi) has some sort of powers that allows him to see what kind of pain a person has within their heart, this could be due to his previous life’s strange abilities and the voice he heard at the end of the episode after briefly talking to Luka (Takahiro Sakurai) (which after this episode I will refer to him has Zess to halt any further confusion).

The thing that particularly drew me to watch this series this season was for the fact that it has hints of BL and also the tremendous voice cast that is in UraBoku is amazing, most of my favourite seiyūs are in this rejoice. Back to the topic in discussion there was a lot of explanations in this episode which made it seem a little boring in a few places but all that was covered up nicely by the addition of humour thanks to Touko (Marina Inoue). At first I didn’t get the dream at the start of the episode but now that I thought about it, I feel that having it there made people easily understand that Yuki was a girl in his previous life the girl Yuki (Yukana), seems to know Luka and thus is the reason why he is watching over Yuki now. Now onto Kanata (Akira Ishida) he is a friend of Yuki’s who used to live in the orphanage until he found his own place, in my opinion I found his explanation about the Raziel’s key a little creepy to put it nicely, there’s something about his personality that is a little off putting to me I wonder how Ishida-kun will pull this off but considering that he’s voiced weirder people. Personally I’m waiting for more people to be introduced and more fighting since I like a little bit of action every now and again changes the atmosphere a little bit right?

Truth be told I’m actually a fangirl for bishie characters and mostly everyone in this series is bishie so that is a big plus for me so forgive me if I go off topic frequently due to my apparent obsession, so far I wonder what type of person Luka is to me his whole character has piqued my interest and since not a lot was revealed about him this episode all I know is that he isn’t one to break a promise. Yuki’s character seems very kind hearted and wants to help people out even if he isn’t acquainted with them himself, I like that type of character but there’s something about how girly his voice his that makes me think he would be the Uke if this was a proper BL.

Moving on the opening and ending songs were performed by the same band Rayflower, they are a newly formed ‘super group’ composed of five people vocalist Takayuki Tazawa「田澤孝介」(SPIRAL MIND, ex. Waive) guitarist YUKI (DUSTAR-3, ex. Λucifer) bassist IKUO (BULL ZEICHEN, Abingdon boys school [support]) keyboardist Keiichi Miyako「都啓一」(SOPHIA) drums Sakura (Lion Heads, Sons of All Pussys, ex. L’Arc~en~Ciel, ex. Zigzo) people from the opening song Uragiri no Nai Sekai Made (To a World Free of Betrayal) is quite rocky and I’m totally in love with it even after hearing it only once, so I think that having this as an opening really makes people watch the anime the quality of the animation for the opening was as good as the song. The ending song Aoi Ito (Blue Thread) is a lot slower than the opening but is still just as good it mellows you out of the anime and calms you down in my opinion can’t wait for the singles to be released on 26th May.

Note: UraBoku episodes 2+3 will be a double post as that week I had an exam and need to revise sorry for the delay.

Personal Enjoyment: 5/5

  1. sorry for the late reply, had my end of trimester uni tests and assignments … so yay for caffeine! Thanks, I’ll definitely have to check those groups out.

    • Don’t worry my Uni exams are coming up as well so I’ve been a little busy to do anything myself lol… Not a problem I’m happy I could help you out.

  2. hmm UraBoku seems a little too shoujo for my liking, but who knows, Uni holidays are around the corner and the the crazy stuff always happens during holidays (like the time I ended up reading Vampire Knight, *shudders*, that’s time I’ll never get back ).
Do you generally torrent download these eps or do you stream? Though the picture quality seems (to me) to be above streaming.

    • It is shoujo though they are trying to make it into BL somehow, I don’t know how that will work considering that it hasn’t hinted at that in the manga somehow I hope this won’t go wrong like Vampire Knight… Technically my holidays have already started for Uni well I have three exams mid May but until then I don’t do anything besides reading manga and watching anime and doing this blog (yeah I read Vampire Knight last summer I regret it tremendously now =/).
I torrent the episodes it takes a while for them to download and I usually wait for a decent subbing group to torrent from, one I can rely that the subbing is good and generally correct… Torrenting is better for me since the picture quality is considerably better than streaming.

      • Is there any subbing group that you’d recommend? Not that i’ve searched for many, but the only group i generally torrent from is Dattebayo. Their subbing (as best as i can tell) is great and they generally have plenty of seeders, however they only sub a few different shows.

      • Well i torrent from Dattebayo as well but also Yuuri-san subs do uraboku and working and Shinsen-subs are good ones also eclipse who do kaicho wa maid-sama and gg fansubs are great subbing groups I’d recommend them.
